Let's be real, fall in Illinois is one of, if not, the best time of year.  The air finally cools down, the leaves start falling, and everything feels a little cozier (as long as it's not 90+ degrees outside!).

You don't need to spend a ton of money to enjoy fall either!  Whether you're looking for a quick day trip or just want to make the most of the season close to home, Illinois has you covered.

Hiking & seeing fall colors

You really don't have to go far to see the beauty.  Starved Rock, Devil's Lake, Matthiessen State Park, and Rock Cut are my favorite places to hike and immerse myself in nature... for free!

Visit apple orchards or pumpkin patches

You can walk around, sample all the snacks inside the barn, and take an iconic photo in front of the apple orchard sign.  So many ways to enjoy the festivities without breaking the bank.

Fall festivals, markets & fairs

Most cities around Illinois have festivals and vendor markets you can support local business owners.  Most of them are free or cost just a few bucks to get in, too.  Just a quick search on Facebook events and you'll find everything you didn't know you needed to visit.
