There are currently 21 states in America that have decriminalized marijuana.  To put it simply, there are 21 states getting high on weed.  One of those, as the Quad Cities knows, is Illinois.

Another 16 states have legalized marijuana for medical purposes.  One of those, to a point, is Iowa.

That could soon change with new legislation introduced in the Iowa House.

Iowa’s licensed dispensaries began providing medical cannabis products to patients on December 1, 2018. If your doctor prescribed you with a medical marijuana card you can legally possess cannabis or marijuana products.

The Iowa Health and Human Services department says that if you have the card and follow the rules, you may possess cannabis in these forms.

  • Vaporizable
  • Oral forms - tablets, capsules, liquids, tinctures and sublingual forms
  • Topical forms - gels, ointments, creams, lotions and transdermal patches
  • Nebulizable inhaled forms
  • Suppositories - rectal and vaginal

Just going to skip right past that last one.

According to KWQC, Democrats have introduced a bill to expand the use of medical marijuana and make recreational marijuana legal for adults.

“We’ve listened to Iowans and heard from people of all parties in all corners of the state who strongly believe it’s time to legalize marijuana. This common-sense bill we’re introducing today isn’t about politics, it’s about people,” said House Democratic Leader Jennifer Konfrst. “Our bill is an opportunity this session to put partisanship aside and work together to get something done that a majority of Iowans want.”

With any legalization bill comes the money.  And with this proposal comes a 10% excise tax and a 1% local optional tax on the sales.  The money on any legal weed sales would then be used on public schools, mental health services, and local public safety.
