Today, December 11, has earned an unusual reputation. According to years of data, it’s the single most common day of the year for couples to call it quits. The trend was first discovered when researchers analyzed Facebook relationship status changes, revealing that December 11 saw the biggest spike in switches from “In a Relationship” to “Single.”

Why December 11 Stands Out

Ever since that study, many have referred to today as “Breakup Day.” A newer survey from the dating app Flirtini reinforces the pattern, reporting that three in four online daters have gone through a breakup during the Christmas season.Experts say there are a few reasons this date hits the sweet spot for splitting up. It’s not so close to the holidays that it feels especially harsh, yet it’s early enough to avoid exchanging gifts or navigating awkward family introductions.

Holiday Pressure Plays a Role

The Christmas season can bring added stress for couples, especially those in newer or shaky relationships. Conversations about future plans or spending the holidays together can make things “feel more serious” than some people are ready for. December becomes a natural point for reflection, which sometimes leads to a breakup.

Other Notorious Breakup Dates

December 11 isn’t alone. Late March is another common time for breakups, as is the Tuesday before Valentine’s Day, widely known as “Red Tuesday.” Both dates appear to follow similar patterns of holiday or seasonal pressure.

(On the bright side, if you do get dumped today, you’re definitely not the only one. And there may be plenty of newly single people entering the dating pool soon.)
