Effigy Mounds National Monument is the Hawkeye State's premier National Park Service unit. Despite (or thanks to) its remote location, the park averages about 61,000 visitors per year, placing it in the bottom 50 percent for annual visitation when compared to all other NPS units.

About Effigy Mounds National Monument
It looks like most of the monument consists of rugged bluff country without trail access. The majority of the 67 mounds are located in the north unit, where the visitor center and the monument’s most popular trails begin. Key sites here include the Great Bear and Little Bear mound groups, Fire Point, and Hanging Rock. The south unit is accessible via a separate trailhead located just over half a mile south of the visitor center, across the Yellow River.

Effigy Mounds' small, Sny Magill unit is located along the Mississippi River floodplain about 12 miles south of the visitor center.
