I'm honestly surprised we didn't rank higher!

YouGov recently conducted a survey of over 77,000 people across all 50 states to figure out which states have the most polite people... and which states have the rudest. According to the article:

"77,005 US adults 18+ were asked 'Do you think that people in your state tend to be more rude or more polite than most Americans?' with answer options for 'More polite,' 'About the same,' 'More rude,' and 'Don’t know.'"

Not surprisingly, the Midwest did really well overall. The results of the survey revealed that folks in almost all Midwest states agree that the people who live there are more polite than most. What DID shock me, though, is that Iowa didn't make the list of the top 10 most polite states. Iowa actually came in at number 13. 42% of the Iowans surveyed say that Iowans are more polite, while 41% say we're about the same as residents of other states. Only 13% said people here are more rude. What happened to "Iowa nice?!"

Here are the top ten most polite states:

  1. Hawaii
  2. Vermont
  3. North Dakota
  4. Montana
  5. South Dakota
  6. Minnesota
  7. Nebraska
  8. Wyoming
  9. Idaho
  10. Maine

If you're wondering which states have the RUDEST people, here are the ten you may want to avoid:

  1. Rhode Island
  2. Massachusetts
  3. New Jersey
  4. Nevada
  5. Connecticut
  6. New York
  7. California
  8. Florida
  9. Pennsylvania
  10. Ohio

As someone who grew up in one of the "ruder" states (Michigan is number 39), I can tell you that there is a BIG difference here in Iowa. My mom has commented on how nice people are here every single time she's come to visit! But, I've never been to Hawaii, so I guess I'll have to take a trip there and report back...
