Laws And Restrictions

The first restriction is that you can only sleep in your car at rest areas... you can see a list of those areas here.

This one will make it hard to spend the night...  Illinois has on the books that you can only park in rest areas for three hours. Thankfully according to multiple sources, law enforcement officers will let you sleep for safety reasons if you really need to. So in an emergency, you should be fine.

It should also be noted that Chicago and other big cities have stricter parking laws, so read all those parking signs carefully.

Finally, no matter where you are parked, In Illinois, you can be arrested for sleeping in your car while intoxicated.
