Man Shot at Monticello Fareway Has Died

Law enforcement in Monticello, Iowa is investigating a shooting at the Fareway store at 433 N. Farley St. at approximately 7:29 this morning.

Our news partner, KCRG TV-9, says a person at a "nearby business said they heard gunshots." Fareway employees said a shooting happened outside the store and everyone inside the store is ok.

48-year-old Aaron McAtee of Monticello was shot behind the Fareway and was flown to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for treatment. McAtee, a Fareway employee, later died from his injuries. Authorities believe he was the victim of a random act of violence.

A person of interest was located in Hopkinton and was shot by a Delaware County Sheriff's Deputy after failing to comply with authorities. He has been identified as 38-year-old Nathan Russell of East Dubuque. Illinois.

According to a press release from Monticello Police Chief Britt Smith, Russell was airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. His condition is unknown. The unnamed deputy has been placed on critical incident leave as the investigation continues.

The Monticello Fareway announced on their Facebook page at 8:07 this morning that "Due to unforeseen circumstances we are temporarily closed". The store opens at 8 a.m. on Tuesdays.

A few minutes after 4 p.m. this afternoon, the store announced they would not reopen until Wednesday morning.

Both Monticello and Anamosa Community Schools were on lockdown for a time this morning. Dr. Jaeger, Monticello Superintendent said in a release, “Due to a safety concern, all school buildings are in a perimeter lockdown at the request of the Monticello Police Department. We are currently not in any danger, this is more of a precautionary measure. But want to be safe. School will go on as normal inside, but we will be not be letting anyone in or out of the buildings. Once we have more information we will send it out. Thank you.”

Monticello Community Schools announced just after 10 a.m. that they had received word from law enforcement that the lockdown could end.

Anamosa Superintendent Darren Hanna released this statement: “ASCD has been notified of an incident in Monticello. As a precautionary measure, we are going to Shelter in Place. We will secure the exterior of all the buildings and wait for further information. There is no immediate threat, this is only a precautionary step. We will send a follow-up communication when we have additional information.”
