Iowans Could Get Help Paying Winter Heating Bills
The cold weather is creeping in. I'll be honest, and I hate to say this, I already turned on my heat.

You know how it is. Our temperatures went from 80 to 50 like they saw a state trooper. I was hoping to hold out a little longer, but Iowa weather has always had a mind of its own. Spring and fall are usually the brief windows when we get a break from paying extra to heat or cool our homes. As those comfortable days come to an end, the frost settles in. Iowa families should start preparing themselves (and their wallets) for the return of the dreaded heating bill.
Of course, turning the heat on is one thing. Paying for it all winter is another. If those bills have you doing a little math before touching the thermostat, Iowa has a program that might help. It's called the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, better known as LIHEAP, which may be worth looking into.
What Is LIHEAP, and Who Qualifies?
LIHEAP is a federally funded program that helps eligible Iowans pay for a portion of their home heating expenses during the winter. It's administered in Iowa through the Department of Health and Human Services and is available for any qualifying homeowners and renters. The program may not cover your entire heating bill, but it can provide some much-needed relief for households trying to make ends meet during the colder, holiday-heavy months.
For the 2026–27 heating season, households generally must have a gross income at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines to qualify. For a household of one, that's an annual income of up to $31,920. For two people, the limit is $43,280, while a household of four can earn up to $66,000 and still meet the income requirement.

Applications opened October 1st for households with someone age 60 or older, a person with a disability, or those experiencing a housing crisis. Other eligible households can begin applying on November 1st. The application period runs through April 30th, 2027.
How Can Iowans Apply?
When it comes to government assistance, getting started is all about knowing where to go. The first step is to visit the state's LIHEAP eligibility tool and provide some basic information about your household. This includes income figures and number of occupants to see if you qualify.
Once eligibility is confirmed, you can apply through the online application portal or reach out to your local Community Action Agency for assistance. If you're not confident in navigating the process online or have questions about the information needed, your local agency can help guide you through the application process.
It Takes Cold, Hard Cash for a Warm, Comfortable Winter
It's one thing to complain about Iowa temperatures. It's another thing entirely when the heating bill begins competing with the rest of your monthly expenses. Now's the best time to look at your budget, prepare for higher utility bills, and see whether assistance is a possibility. LIHEAP is worth a closer look. Winter in Iowa is inevitable. Being caught off guard by the heating bill doesn't have to be.
