Over 300 Illinois National Guard Members Deploy to the Middle East

In a solemn and impactful ceremony at Wintrust Arena, over 300 Illinois National Guard soldiers and their families prepared for deployment to the Middle East as part of Operation Spartan Shield. The soldiers, clad in military uniforms, took center stage, receiving words of encouragement from Major General Rodney Boyd.

As the soldiers readied themselves for their mission, they expressed a mix of anxiety and excitement about their deployment. Some deploying for the first time while others highlighted the emotional toll of leaving a whole family behind. As soldiers they acknowledged the difficulty of leaving loved ones but underscored their commitment to serving the country.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker commended the soldiers during the mobilization ceremony, emphasizing the significance of their readiness. Additionally, U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth, a combat veteran herself, spoke at the ceremony, acknowledging the dangers soldiers face and expressing gratitude for their sacrifice. Operation Spartan Shield (OSS) is a comprehensive initiative directed by United States Army Central, aimed at maintaining a U.S. military posture in Southwest Asia. The deployment involves Task Force Spartan, a multi-component organization that includes active Army and National Guard units, along with support from the U.S. Army Reserve.
