We've graduated from playing 'slap the bag' to screwtop wine.

National Wine Day has really interesting timing this year. It will be May 25th, which is Memorial Day, which is incidentally a day a lot of us don't have to be anywhere. *cue the sound of popping corks*

While it's possible that you've blamed wine for texting your ex lately, there's a specific kind of wine that Iowans are gravitating towards within the last 5 years.

Joybird looked at Google Trends from the last 5 years in each state to find the most searched wine type among the most popular wines.

Iowa's favorite wine is moscato.

Not a particular kind of moscato, just moscato in general. Being a pink moscato fan myself, I think we're on the right track.

Moscato is the most searched wine overall and especially in the Midwest.

Merlot ranks close behind moscato for popularity, of course, as you're either a sweet wine fan or a dry wine connoisseur. Meanwhile, the Northeast is heavily focused on prosecco. Pinot Grigio appeared in a few states on the East Coast.

Michigan and Illinois are the 2 Midwest states that don't love moscato, instead they're more focused on merlot.

Some wines had one-state appearances: California has been Googling cab sav, Oregon's been on Pinot Noir, New York searching Riesling, Hawaii has been looking up Chardonnay, and Washington has searched Shiraz.

Whether you're going to dinner with your friends this weekend or hanging out at home with a bottle and a true crime marathon (cheers to us), stick with whatever sweet or dry wine you like and don't explain to the whole table why it pairs well with whatever. We don't care.
