Why Did Governor Pritzker Order U.S. Flags in Illinois to Half-Staff?
Another order from the Illinois Governor's office has directed all U.S. and state flags to be lowered to half-staff through this weekend.
Honoring Service and Sacrifice
In Illinois, orders to lower flags to half-staff come directly from the Governor's Office, following the Illinois Flag Display Act.

This ensures communities across the state recognize the sacrifices of public servants, members of the armed forces, and first responders who are killed in the line of duty.
When a tragedy happens, flags are typically flown from sunrise to sunset on the day of the funeral and the two days immediately before.
A Tradition of Rememberance
In Illinois, the practice of lowering the U.S. and state flags extends beyond honoring fallen service members to include police officers, firefighters, and others who have given their lives while serving their communities.
These orders are intended not only as symbols of respect but also as visible reminders of the costs that families and communities pay in the loss of life.
Current Half-Staff Order in Illinois
The Department of Central Management Services announced that Governor JB Pritzker has issued a statewide half-staff order in response to the recent tragic events in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The directive requires all entities covered by the Illinois Flag Display Act to lower both the U.S. and Illinois flags.
The order went into effect today (Thursday, 8/28) and will remain through sunset on Sunday, August 31, to honor the lives lost and those most directly affected by this tragedy.
