Justin Moore Shares Why Cinco de Mayo Is Special to His Family
Justin Moore says Cinco de Mayo is a special day for him and his wife, and they like to celebrate it with their favorite Cinco De Mayo drink.
Cinco de Mayo celebrates the victory of the Mexican army over France at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, according to NBC News. But it's become a much bigger celebration in the U.S. than in Mexico over the years, largely associated with drinking.
May 5 holds a much more personal place in Moore's household, though. On May 5, 2015, he and his wife, Kate, began a project that is very, very special to their growing family, which includes three young daughters; Ella Kole, Kennedy Faye and Rebecca Klein Moore. The couple celebrate the holiday with their own favorite drinks.
"My favorite Cinco de Mayo drink is a margarita, even though I hate tequila," the "You Look Like I Need a Drink" singer tells Taste of Country, adding, "My wife loves margaritas. I love when she has the opportunity to enjoy herself. I get to do it for a living. And, side note, it's a special day for us. We started our 'forever' house a year ago today. Cinco De Mayo will always be special to us."
Moore is from the tiny town of Poyen, Ark., and he moved his family back there a couple of years ago. He's building a dream house on land that has been in his family for generations, and he says that's where his family will settle permanently.
“It’s been in our family since the late 1800s, so it ain’t no sellin’ it,” he states. “You don’t go build a nice house in a town of 300 people and expect to be able to get a return on your investment. That ain’t gonna happen. So, we’re gonna be there forever.”
He admits it might seem like an unusual move for a country star to choose to live in such a small town.
“People think I am nuts,” Moore tells People. “But I want my girls to run through the cow pasture to my mom and dad’s house. I want them to go to school where I went to school. It’s important to me to see them growing up and having a normal childhood.”
