Turns out Iowa has a few more dangerous animals than I thought. Fun fact, it is so well known that there are already plenty of lists about them. These animals are obviously best to keep your distance from. Some animals however are a bit smaller in Iowa, but still very dangerous, and even venomous.

It feels weird talking about venomous animals in Iowa seeing as though there are not a ton of them, and they are rarely talked about, but they are real, and it's important to keep an eye out.

Thankfully the odds of running into one of these creatures are not super likely. (especially in the winter.)  Still, I never realized they could all be found in Iowa.

  • Timber Rattlesnake - Timber Rattlesnakes can be found across most of the United States. Though they're typically shy, if you encounter one, they may feel threatened and strike.
  • Copperhead - I'm noticing a trend here. Due to their camouflage, these snakes are considered the most dangerous by many.
  • Prairie Rattlesnake - Great... 2 kinds of venomous snakes in Iowa. Prairie Rattlesnakes are most common in the Western part of Iowa, and can get pretty big.
  • Massasaugav - There are more snakes than I was expecting. Their bite packs quite the punch and can be deadly.
  • Pelecinid Wasp - Known for their painful sting... they also fly.
  • Brown Recluse Spiders - A bite that never seems to go away, and can be extremely painful.
  • Black Widow Spiders - Black widows are perhaps the most infamous of spiders. The red hourglass on their abdomen makes them easy to identify, as to their strangely woven webs. If you get bit by a black widow, get to the hospital! These bites are painful and occasionally fatal.
