Most people believe they can tell when someone isn’t being honest—but according to body language expert Judi James, it’s not that easy. Many signs people associate with lying can also appear when someone is nervous, shy, or worried about not being believed. Still, there are a few common clues that could reveal a fib.

10. Too Many Filler Words

If every sentence starts with “umm,” “you know,” or “basically,” they might be stalling while they think of what to say next. Overusing filler words can hint that someone is trying to buy time or sound natural.

9. Forced Smile

A fake smile that doesn’t reach the eyes can be a red flag. “A forced, lifeless smile can be a sign they’re fibbing,” James said. “Or dead inside.”

8. Barrier Rituals

Crossed arms, turning away, or constant head shaking may signal defensiveness. These unconscious actions create space between the liar and the listener.

7. Overcompensation

Liars often act overly confident to appear believable. Puffing up their chest or exaggerating their honesty can be a way to convince you they’re telling the truth.

6. Eye-Dancing

If their eyes keep darting around the room, it could show panic or an effort to avoid eye contact. This “eye-dancing” may indicate someone is uncomfortable or caught off guard.

5. The Poker Face

Some people go completely still when lying, hoping to hide any giveaway movements. It’s hard to read—but that blank expression could mean more than you think.

4. Fidgeting

Tapping fingers, shifting in a chair, or adjusting clothing can all be signs of unease. “Unfortunately, that means all elementary school children are liars,” James joked.

3. Voice Changes

A higher pitch or breathless tone often appears when a person is stressed—something that happens when lying. Listen closely for sudden shifts in how they speak.

2. Long Pauses

Liars may stall or repeat your question to buy time before answering. These pauses help them think through what they want to say without slipping up.

1. Eye Direction

Eye movement can reveal what’s happening in someone’s mind. Looking to the right may mean they’re making something up, while looking to the left could indicate they’re recalling real memories.

While none of these behaviors prove dishonesty, being aware of them can help you spot when a story might not add up.
