This State Park also has made lists of best ranked parks in the state of Iowa. This quiet spot is actually located in the middle of bustling Arnolds Park. Only In Yours State went on to say,

It should be noted that there is a tragedy that happened here that does haunt some of the great rankings is this park.
Spirit Lake Massacre
This happened long ago in 1857. you can also find the the cabin of survivor Abbie Garner now stands as a museum and memorial. During a terrible winter, a Wahpekute band of Santee Sioux on scattered Iowa frontier. killed 35-40 settlers in their scattered holdings.
A towering memorial can also be seen on the grounds, paying tribute to the 35-40 victims.
This was reported as the last Native American attack in Iowa. I had actually never heard of this and was caught of guard when researching this park. It was going to just be a fun light heart story talking about how its small and beautiful, but while that's true, the history is very long, and dark.
