What’s Coming to the Wacky Waters Site?

Back in the day you may have had a good time at Wacky Waters on Fairmount Street in Davenport. It may have been one of your summer family outings or even a summer tradition. That changed in 2006 when the park closed amid financial challenges according to the Quad City Times. So what's happened at Wacky Waters since then? And what's next for the site?

In 2007 Eastern Iowa Community Colleges purchased Wacky Waters with the hope of building a larger emergency services training facility. Specifically a place where first responders could practice water rescues. The purchase also led to the construction of the Davenport Fire Department Training Center. In 2011 the City of Davenport acquired the land their training center sits on from EICC.

Now Eastern Iowa Community Colleges has an interested buyer for the parts of Wacky Waters it still owns. Unfortunately it won't be the rebirth of a water park, or an amusement place. It won't even be an expansion of the Midwest Center for Public Safety Training. Hawkeye Paving wants to move their corporate headquarters out there and improve the property. EICC has given Hawkeye until October to meet the conditions of the sale, which they're already working on.

The programs EICC offer that have used that land will still be offered, the courses will be taught at another location. The money Eastern Iowa Community Colleges receives from the sale will be put towards maintenance and building improvements.

As time goes on it seems to footprint where Wacky Waters once stood will continue to fade. Hopefully your memories of good times at Wacky Waters won't.
