It's the twenty-first century... can a small town really be that off the grid if it is making headlines, and lists like this? According to Only In Your State the answer is yes. Obviously, this town is still well connected to the rest of America, but thanks to its seclusion, it's about as "Off the grid" as many of us can ever hope to get to.

The town we are looking at is in the middle of a beautiful forest. It is estimated to be about 2.5 hours from Minneapolis and more than five hours from Milwaukee.

Now more than ever many more Americans are looking to get away from it all. This could be what they are looking for.

If you want to take a break from the twenty-first century, Hayward Wisconsin is surrounded by vast forests and keeps its distance from big cities. Some parts are very modern while others are perfectly separate from others.

Hayward was originally a logging town, and it’s still surrounded by the 858,400-acre Chequamegon National Forest. If you would like to catch some of your own food, there are also plenty of scenic lakes that are filled with fish. Hayward’s lakes are so well known that the town is home to the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame.

Personally, I bet there is an even better town out there that is so off the grid that we didn't even know about it to put it on the list. The town does hold large events from time to time which could cramp the style of living off the grid.
