University of Iowa Will Sell Beer and Wine at Stadium and Arena

You won't have to worry about sneaking alcohol into the stadium anymore. In heaven there actually WILL be beer. The University of Iowa will add beer and wine sales at its athletic facilities this fall.

Beer and wine will be available for purchase inside Kinnick Stadium, but not in the areas immediately adjacent to the respective student section. Changes are also coming for tailgating too.

Athletic events at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Duane Banks Field and Bob Pearl Field will also be included in the pilot program during the 2021-22 school year.

According to the Gazette, 30 percent of the net alcohol sales will go toward research-based initiatives supported by the UI Alcohol Harm Reduction Committee, a group formed in 2009 to decrease high-risk drinking.

The University of Iowa Athletics Department are also changing parking lot hours. It used to be you could post up at 6 a.m. on game days, but this year, parking lots will open no more than six hours prior to kickoff and no earlier than 6 a.m. There are no changes to postgame policies.

“While there is an opportunity for increased revenue, this decision was based on enhancing the fan experience and providing an additional amenity to our fans,” Iowa athletics director Gary Barta said in a release. “At the conclusion of the 2021-22 academic year, we will work with our campus partners to review this pilot program.”

Add Iowa to the list of Big Ten schools like Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Ohio State and Rutgers who are also selling beer and/or wine in their football stadiums.
