WalletHub study ranks Aurora 33rd out of more than 180 U.S. cities

The financial analysis site evaluated 182 cities across the country based on a wide range of safety factors. Categories included community safety, natural disaster risk, and financial security. WalletHub also considered statistics such as assault rates, traffic deaths, unemployment levels, and access to health insurance coverage.

Aurora Stands Out Among Major Illinois Cities

Aurora landed at number 33 overall—an impressive feat for Illinois’ second-largest city. It was the only Illinois city to break into the top 50. For comparison, Chicago ranked far lower at 161st, just behind Los Angeles. Other Midwest cities that earned high marks include Overland Park, Kansas; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Madison, Wisconsin, which secured the 25th spot.

Midwest Cities Shine in National Safety Rankings

WalletHub explained that “the safest cities in America protect residents from threats of bodily harm and property damage but also help secure people’s financial safety.”

Aurora Earns Positive Recognition for Illinois

While Chicago often dominates the headlines, cities like Aurora, Naperville, and Joliet continue to represent Illinois in a positive light. Aurora’s strong placement on this list shows that big cities in the Midwest can still offer residents a safe and stable environment to live, work, and thrive.
