Bettendorf Considering Changes to Downtown One-Ways

One way streets became a big deal in the 1970's as a way to improve traffic flow.

Detractors say that one-way streets contributed to the decline of businesses in urban areas as traffic was able to more easily and quickly pass by.

That thinking is one of the factors in a plan being considered by Bettendorf City Council to convert Grant and State Streets back to two-way traffic in the downtown corridor.

A Quad City Times article says a consultant's report to council estimates the cost of the conversion at $20 million. The money would align the streets and provide "a more walkable, accessible and vibrant environment while committing to the economic redevelopment of the downtown area."
