It's Homecoming week for Bettendorf schools.  Friday the Bettendorf Bulldogs will take on Davenport Central on the football field.  The week leading up to the game is always fun for students as well with different activities at the school including days of dressing up in themes.  However, one theme was determined to be offensive and changed by the Bettendorf Middle School students.

Theme week for Bettendorf schools.

Every day this week the students from K-12 are able to dress up in different themes.  Classes in the younger grades also then use themes to have games and learn around them.

The rest of the week for Bettendorf students looks fun.

Tuesday is "Beach Day".  Which is school-appropriate beach attire.  Makes sense and is not offensive.

Wednesday is "we wear pink day or PJ Day" depending on the school and grade.  Fun, and not offensive.

Thursday is "Favorite Celebrity" day.  So far no issues with this one.

And of course the week finishes off with school spirit.  The black and yellow.  The bulldogs.  The shirts, and hats of the school that the student is attending K-12.

So which day was deemed offensive in this theme week?

It was the first day of the theme week.  For the elementary schools, Monday was "Fashion Disaster Day".  What is a fashion disaster?  It's wearing crazy clothes that don't match and having crazy hair for the day.

But according to a teacher at the Bettendorf Middle School, the kids wanted it changed because "Fashion Disaster" could "offend somebody's self-expression and hurt people's feelings".  So they changed it to "Mix and Match Day".

Same style.  But a different name to not offend.

Bettendorf Bull Dogs will wear their fashionable gold and yellow uniforms on the football field Friday night to take on the blue and white of Davenport Central.  No fashion disasters there.
