What started as an argument between a New York couple ended in an explosion that changed one man’s life forever.

A 35-year-old woman from Suffolk County is now facing up to 25 years in prison after prosecutors say she tossed a stick of dynamite into her boyfriend’s bedroom while he was asleep... An attack that left him without a hand.

According to Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney, a jury found Keyonna Waddell guilty of first-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon on Friday.

Awakened by a Strange Hissing Sound

Officials say the violent incident happened on March 22, 2024, following a dispute between the couple. Prosecutors say the man had gone to bed when he was suddenly jolted awake by a strange hissing noise.

As he looked around the room, he spotted flames on the floor near his bed.

That’s when he realized it was a lit stick of dynamite.

Investigators say he first tried to put it out, but when that failed, he grabbed it in a desperate attempt to throw it outside before it could explode.

He didn’t make it in time.

The dynamite detonated in his hand, causing severe injuries and forcing doctors to amputate both his hand and part of his arm.

Previous Threats and a Possible 25-Year Sentence

In the chaos after the blast, prosecutors say the victim saw Waddell running from the apartment on foot. She was arrested the following day.

During the investigation, authorities also learned she had allegedly threatened him with dynamite on multiple occasions before the explosion.

“Domestic violence can escalate to deadly levels, and this case is a sobering reminder of that reality,” Tierney said in a statement. “A dangerous individual has been held accountable and will face a lengthy prison sentence for this horrific act.”

Waddell is scheduled to be sentenced on May 27.
