Roof Collapse Had Firefighters Retreating Out Of Burning Galesburg House
A family escaped unharmed Friday morning after a rapidly spreading house fire tore through a two-story home on North Broad Street in Galesburg.
Residents Make It Out Safely Before Crews Arrive
Firefighters with the Galesburg Fire Department were called to 441 N. Broad St. around 10:01 a.m. on May 15. Crews from all three stations responded immediately after reports of heavy smoke and flames coming from the residence.
Roof Collapse Forces Crews Out of the Home
When firefighters arrived, flames were already consuming large portions of the structure. Firefighters from Fremont Station attacked the fire from the rear of the home while Central Station crews entered through the front door to search the building. Brooks Station personnel stretched a second hose line to assist with suppression efforts.
As conditions worsened, part of the roof collapsed, creating dangerous structural concerns inside the house. Firefighters were ordered to evacuate and transitioned to defensive operations to keep the blaze from spreading further.
Crews then used several hose lines along with an aerial ladder truck to knock down the flames and shield neighboring homes from the intense heat.
Red Cross Assists Displaced Residents
Officials confirmed no injuries were reported among firefighters or the people living inside the home. Off-duty personnel were called in to help maintain emergency coverage across the city while crews remained at the scene.
The American Red Cross responded to help residents displaced by the fire, while Ameren worked to shut off utilities to the damaged structure.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and portions of the roadway near the scene continued to be closed as firefighters worked throughout the day.
