Former Quad Cities Baseball Player Makes Impressive MLB Debut

A former Black Hawk College baseball player is officially living the dream.

Lucas Spence, who spent two seasons at Black Hawk College in Moline, made his Major League Baseball debut with the Houston Astros on July 17, and he wasted no time proving he belongs on baseball's biggest stage.

Spence, an Illinois native, began his collegiate career at Black Hawk College, where he quickly became one of the program's top players. During his two seasons with the Braves, he hit .368 while showcasing his athleticism as both an outfielder and pitcher. His success in Moline helped earn him a transfer to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where he won the Ohio Valley Conference batting title before signing with the Astros as an undrafted free agent in 2024.

Just two years later, that opportunity paid off.

In his MLB debut against the Baltimore Orioles, Spence got the start in center field and showed remarkable patience at the plate, drawing a nine-pitch walk in his first Major League plate appearance. Later in the game, he collected his first career MLB hit with an eighth-inning single, giving family, friends, and Astros fans plenty to celebrate. Astros manager Joe Espada praised the rookie's approach at the plate following the game.

For baseball fans around the Quad Cities, Spence's rise is especially meaningful. Black Hawk College has long been known for developing talented athletes, and now one of its former standouts has reached the highest level of the sport.

His journey shows that there isn't just one path to the Major Leagues. After going undrafted in 2024, Spence signed with Houston following his lone pre-draft workout with the Astros. He quickly climbed through the organization's minor league system thanks to his strong defense, disciplined approach at the plate, and ability to get on base.
