If You Grew Up In Iowa Chances Are You’ve Eaten These
It wasn't until I lived in another state that I realized not everyone grew up with these foods. Here are some classic dishes which were dinner for many of us growing up in Iowa.
Tuna Noodle Casserole- wide noodles, cream of mushroom soup, tuna, milk and crushed potato chips on top. As I became an adult I added peas to ensure I had a vegetable with my dinner. :-)
Goulash-elbow noodles, marinara, ground beef, ham and onion
Chicken and Rice-my daughters and there friends years later revealed their nickname for this dish was 'chicken and $hi#.' This dish was another easy throw-together-after-work meal-chicken breasts, uncooked white rice, 1 can of cream of chicken soup and water; baked in one casserole dish.
This was never made with a 'manwich' sauce we made it with ground beef, ketchup, brown sugar and a pinch of yellow mustard. Sometimes we added Velveeta to melt in the meat.
Ambrosia'salad- we loved that this dish was our 'salad.' It included, marshmallows, shredded coconut, sour cream, and a can of fruit cocktail.
What food staples did you grow up eating? My kids still like my goulash, but I'll never make chicken and rice again!
