It’s that time of year again — leaves are piling up in yards. While raking them may be a seasonal headache, how you dispose of those leaves in Iowa actually matters more than you might think. Some methods could get you fined if you’re not careful.

Many homeowners are unaware of the proper way to get rid of leaves, but before you dump them in the trash or set them on fire, here’s what you need to know.

Putting Leaves in the Trash Is Illegal in Iowa

It may sound like the simplest solution, but tossing your leaves into the garbage bin is against the law in Iowa. Not only could you face penalties, but your city could too.

Why is it illegal?

Landfills aren’t designed to process organic waste like leaves. Once they’re buried, they can’t decompose properly.

When mixed with trash, leaves can’t be reused or recycled.

Yard waste like leaves can be turned into compost or mulch, which helps the environment rather than harming it.

Blowing or Burning Leaves Can Lead to Fines

In Davenport, blowing or raking leaves into the street violates the Clean Water Act and City Code Chapter 8.14.400. The first fine is $100, but repeated offenses can cost up to $500.

It’s also illegal to burn leaves or have open fires containing grass, garbage, or other prohibited materials.

Here’s the Right Way to Get Rid of Leaves

Residents in Davenport and Bettendorf can dispose of leaves for free through December 5. Just use Kraft paper yard bags and place them at the curb on your trash day — no stickers required during this period.

After December 5, yard waste stickers will again be needed, or you can drop off your yard waste anytime at the local Compost Facility.

Doing it the right way not only keeps you fine-free — it also helps keep Iowa clean.
