It's National Sandwich Day. I'm happy to focus on sandwiches today. It's a nice diversion.

If you had to choose Iowa and Illinois' most favorite sandwich, what would it be? If I had to guess, I'd say pork chop for Iowa and maybe pulled pork for Illinois. We love those here in the Quad Cities.

This might not be the popular choice, but personally my fave is the classic tuna sammie. I remember as a kid, I used to trade my Twinkies, chips, and Ding Dongs (yep, worlds most unhealthy lunch items) for anyone's tuna sandwich. The kids thought I was crazy.

I found tuna sammiches irresistible. Thinking back, it wasn't the most appetizing to think of the homely tuna sandwich sitting unrefrigerated in someone's locker. We didn't bring anything to cool it back in those days so it sat for 3 hours until lunch....warm. All that mayo or Miracle Whip snuggled around the oil packed tuna on bread. Today we wouldn't dream of leaving a mayo based sandwich out; unrefrigerated for hours yet somehow we survived.

To celebrate the day, Zippia has come up with a list of the most popular sandwiches in all 50 states using Google Trends data. You can read about how they conducted the study here. Here are the most popular sandwiches in the Quad Cites and surrounding states.

Turns out, I was right about Iowa.

  • Iowa-Pork Tenderloin Sandwich
  • Illinois-Italian Beef
  • Wisconsin-Tuna
  • Missouri-Chicken Sandwich
  • Minnesota-Fried Egg

Fluffernutter actually made the list. It's the most popular sandwich in Massachusetts and North Dakota. Americans love their sandwiches. Zippia says we eat 300 million of them every day.
