Who doesn't like tacos? When I saw the Facebook invitation to the QC Taco Fest, I thought 'hey, that sounds great' but I didn't really think of the logistics or the social distancing. The date for the event was two months away on September 27 @ noon.

My friends were having fun tagging each other and we all agree, eating the Quad Cities best tacos and sampling tequila for margaritas sounded just plain fun. Here's what the event touted:

The Quad Cities' best TACOS in 1 major event! Be a part of Quad Cities history! We crown the best tacos in multiple categories. Who will win the QCs first coveted ‘People’s Choice Taco” voted by YOU?! Plus, best MARGARITA, salsa, and many other categories! Find out at this epic fiesta!

We will have over 10 of the best Quad CIties's taco restaurants serving up tacos all day fighting to be crowned the BEST. PLUS, over 50 Tequilas to sample and of course margaritas and Mexican beer, live Music, and more!

This is a family friendly event with activities for the kids like pinatas, bounce houses, karaoke, face painting, balloons and more. There will also be LIVE DJs and bands throughout the day.

Plus, our first annual TACO EATING CHAMPIONSHIP & much more!

Proceeds benefit local Quad Cities charities!

The event started getting some traction. Enough traction to get the Davenport Police involved.

It turns out people were concerned. Can an event this size happen given the rise in coronavirus cases in Scott County? Where exactly is this event being held? Which taco restaurants are involved? How do we get to taste all those tequila samples?

Police contacted event organizers and got little information. In fact, the organizer hung up on police when pressed for details. Also, you need an alcohol permit for an event like this. There apparently wasn't one.

Read the DPD's media release here.

So it turns out the whole thing is a scam. How dare the organizer try to seduce us with tacos and margaritas!! That should be a crime!

Police have issued tips to help spot scam events which include 'always fully research event web sites before purchasing. Make sure there is full disclosure of exact location and contact information. Scammers often use names that sound similar to those of real festivals.' Read more about protecting yourself here.
