Another Day Another Scam in the Quad Cities

There's no shortage of unscrupulous people who want to separate us from our hard earned cash or possessions. According to the Quad City Times the Davenport Police Department is warning residents about a home burglary scam taking place around the Quad Cities. In this scam, a team of people work together posing as home improvement or utility workers, and try to gain access to your home to commit a burglary.

According to the paper, here's some ways to prevent becoming a victim of this kind of crime:

• Keep your doors and windows locked. Even when you're home.
• When someone knocks at your door, look out a window and see who it is. Make sure the person sees you so they're aware you're home.
• Don't open your door to someone you don't know. Don't give them the opportunity to push their way in. If you think it's a legit utility worker, you can call the utility company to check. Legit workers will wait and understand.
• Don't be fooled by phony uniforms, work vests and ID's. If you didn't ask to have a utility check something, or seek out a company to work on your home ... Don't open your door to these people.
• If you feel pressured by the person at your door, call 911. Don't give in and let them in.

If something seems off, there's a good chance it is. Listen to that gut feeling. Scammers that do this are convincing. The bad ones are already in jail. Stay vigilant.
