I was taking my wife to work on the morning of September 11, 2001. We were exiting I-74 on the Middle Road off-ramp listening to KWQC on the radio. The second plane had hit the second tower and the disbelieving reporter on the air was speculating that perhaps there was a problem with air-traffic control system in New York.

While we like to remember tragic events by recalling where we were when we heard about them, it is important to remember that the day is about those we lost.

The Rock Island Arsenal will remember those lost on 9/11 with a memorial service at 10am today. The ceremony will include a keynote speech by Lt. Gen. (Retired) Raymond V. Mason, director, Army Emergency Relief.

Those wishing to attend should prepare to show their ID at the gate.
