Two Quad Cities Schools Win State Volleyball Championships
Two local teams from the Mississippi Athletic Conference (MAC) claimed state volleyball titles yesterday. At the Xtream Arena in Coralville, the North Scott Lady Lancers and the Davenport Assumption Lady Knights brought home championships in Class 4A and 3A.
Assumption Celebrates Another Title
Davenport Assumption, seeded second, dominated fifth-seeded Humboldt in the 3A final with a clean 3–0 sweep. Seniors Ellah Derrer and Erin Robbins, with help from sophomore Belle Cotton and setter Carsyn Kelley, led the charge. Derrer notched 16 kills in the final and earned all-tournament team honors with a tournament total of 50 kills. Robbins posted eight kills and four assists, while Kelley tallied 36 assists in the championship game. Cotton chipped in with 11 kills and eight digs, and libero Piper Hodge recorded 20 digs.
“Just so proud of my team and just so happy we finally got here,” Robbins said. “I mean, our team motto is ‘Job’s not finished’ and I’m glad that we were able to finish all the way through.”
Kelley reflected on the moment: “The minute that ball hits the floor, you just kind of feel nothing at all until your team is all the way around you and you’re swarmed with all that happiness.”
Derrer added: “I honestly started tearing up… all my hard work and all my teammates’ hard work has finally paid off.” The Lady Knights closed their season at 28–7.
North Scott’s Road to Victory
North Scott, seeded fifth, upset second-seeded Sioux Center in the 4A final, winning 3–1. Senior and all-tournament team captain McKenzie Moeller recorded 32 kills in the championship match and totaled 90 kills for the tournament. Addision Allen contributed 42 assists in the title match and 137 assists across all games, while Adalynn Johnson added 11 kills and libero Ainsley Haedt pulled in 17 digs.
“I’m at a loss for words right now, I’m just so ecstatic about how far we’ve come,” Allen said. “We’ve really proven ourselves through all these games… we’ve worked so hard for this moment.”
The victory is North Scott’s second state title in three years. “It’s so surreal, and I’m glad to do it with this group of people,” Moeller added. “We knew at the beginning of the season what we wanted, but it’s not easy work, so we were like ‘hey, let’s push ourselves.’”
Coach Brian Schubert praised the team’s fan support: “They are second to none, a fantastic crowd, and they get you motivated… Having a lot of fun, and to top it off with the state championship? Can’t get any better.”
North Scott concluded the season with a 27–10 record.
The Two Head Coaches Are Great Friends
The funny coincidence is that both head coaches are friends and have coached together in the past at the Iowa Select Volleyball Club. Coach Schubert of NS was even the head coach at Assumption in 2024, as Coach Cotton Assisted. Who knows, we might see Coach Cotton and Coach Schubert celebrating their wins together this weekend as they bring home their new hardware to the Quad Cities.
You can see in this photo, after Assumption's championship win, (North Scott won the 4A Championship hours before) you can see Coach Cotton and Coach Schubert hugging in happiness in the bottom left corner of the picture.
