This is for all the areas considered “small towns,” not big cities like Chicago—which would still be a change, but not nearly as drastic as if someone from California moved to a different part of Illinois. The great state of Illinois is more than it's three largest cities.

There are some things someone would need to get used to after moving to a smaller area. Some of the things are good, like less traffic. which is somthing we all love to see... unless there is road work. Then it gets bad. Another great thing is that the noise pollution is lower—unless you live by train tracks, in which case you might disagree.

Personally, this time of year, I love the small-town parades!

Californians Moving To IllinoisAre In For A Big Surprise

1. Humidity

First and foremost, the humidity throughout Illinois is much different than what Californians are used to. I have lived in Iowa my whole life and I'm still not use to it.

Most restaurants and other places close by 8 PM, compared to big cities where some places are just opening at 8.

California's precipitation varies dramatically, while Wisconsin's is much more consistent.

4. Politeness

Yes, “Midwest nice” is a real thing. You can become lifelong friends with someone over something as simple as regularly seeing each other at the local bar.
