Chance of a white Christmas this year in the Quad Cities is slim to none

There is nothing more Christmas-y than waking up to a blanket of snow on the ground Christmas morning. Really, that's the only time snow is accepted. Unfortunately for this year, snow on Christmas morning will most likely not happen. Thanks again, 2020.

It's hard to believe that we're almost to the end of 2020 (thank goodness). Christmas is right around the corner, and a nice little present this year would have been a white Christmas. But, in 2020 fashion, there will most likely not be a white Christmas in the Quad Cities.

While we are expecting some snowflakes this weekend, that snow will not stick. But will there be any snow storms as we get closer to Christmas? No, probably not.

The Weather Channel isn't giving much hope for a white Christmas. Granted we are still decently far out from Christmas and Quad Cities weather is unpredictable, the chance of snow is extremely low.

The week of Christmas looks like it will actually warm up a little. The Weather Channel predicts that we will see highs in mid-40's with partly cloudy skies, which will make it hard for snow to stick. The closest snow we will see to Christmas (so far) is going to happen on Wednesday, December 23. The Weather Channel is predicting a 30% chance of snow the morning of December 23 and a high of 42*.

Christmas eve's forecast right now is party cloudy skies with high of 37*, and it's the exact same thing for Christmas day. Chances of precipitation for both days is 25%, according to the Weather Channel.

But how often do we see a white Christmas in the QC?

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a white Christmas in the Quad Cities happens roughly 51-60% of the time. In the northern part of our listening area, the chances increase to 61-75%, and towards the south, chances of a white Christmas drops to 41-50%.

Between 1981 and 2010 (most recent data) the Quad Cities had only 13 white Christmas's. A white Christmas according to the NWS is defined as 1" of snow or more recorded being on the ground Christmas morning.

Even though the chances of a white Christmas in the Quad Cities is extremely low this year, that doesn't mean a Christmas miracle isn't in store for us! Then again, it is still 2020...
