September is Drive the Great River Road Month.The Great River Road follows the Mississippi River from Northern Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. It sounds like a fun road trip, but not one you can do in an afternoon or a weekend. Exploring the Great River Road in Iowa, now that's another story. There's plenty to see and do while you motor along the Mississippi River and you don't have to drive very far either.

If you like outdoor recreation and scenery there's plenty to do from checking out the Yellow River State Forest and Pikes Peak State Park near the Minnesota border to checking out the Flint River Trail in Burlington and the Heron Bend Conservation Area in Montrose. Plus many other parks and recreation areas along the way.

If you're a history buff there's plenty of experiences you can enjoy too. There's the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque. The Saw Mill Museum in Clinton. The Pine Creek Grist Mill in Muscatine. Old Fort Madison in Fort Madison. And the George M. Verity Riverboat Museum in Keokuk.

The bottom line, if you hop on the Great River Road and head in either direction you'll be able to enjoy the beauty of the Mississippi from Riverfront Parks.
