It was a special weekend for an Iowa Army veteran and his family. Michael Hulsey followed in the footsteps of family members and joined the U.S. Army in 2001. The former U.S. Army Sergeant was deployed to Afghanistan and two different times was deployed to the country of Iraq. During his time in Iraq, Hulsey was supporting combat operations when he was injured. He received the Purple Heart and received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army.

On Saturday, March 19, Hulsey and his wife, Meaghan, and their kids were presented with a mortage-free home. The happy couple, who's been together almost two decades, also have three children. The house was presented to the family as part of a cooperative effort of the Military Warriors Support Foundation and Wells Fargo, partners who've done incredible things together in a relatively short period of time.

Below, Hulsey, his wife, and one of his children receive the key to his home.

Military Warriors Support Foundation began the process of gifting homes 12 years ago and they've now given more than 900 mortgage-free houses to deserving veterans in all 50 states through both Homes4GoldStars and Homes4WoundedHeroes, which Hulsey applied through. Beginning three years before they receive the house, a financial mentor works with the family on savings goals, financial plans, and more.

Wells Fargo has donated homes in every state, over 400 all together, in the last 10 years. The total value of the houses is in excess of $60 million. They've also donated more than a million dollars in payment-free vehicles to veterans wounded in combat.

At a Saturday morning ceremony in the small town of Goldfield, in north central Iowa, Hulsey thanked everyone involved for providing the family with their "first-ever home."

Congratulations to the entire Hulsey family on their new home, and thank you for your service and sacrifice.

LOOK: What 25 Historic Battlefields Look Like Today

The following is an examination of what became of the sites where America waged its most important and often most brutal campaigns of war. Using a variety of sources, Stacker selected 25 historically significant battlefields in American history. For each one, Stacker investigated what happened there when the battles raged as well as what became of those hallowed grounds when the fighting stopped.

These are the battlefields that defined the United States military’s journey from upstart Colonial rebels to an invincible global war machine.
