Last month, the state of Iowa legalized both the sale and use of fireworks. The legislation still allowed municipalities to regulate the times fireworks could be used.

Where no local law exists, the state legislation allows for use between the hours of 9pm and 10pm.

Muscatine is the first area municipality to take advantage of the language to limit use of fireworks to certain dates and hours outside of the state law.

City council voted to restrict the use of fireworks to between July 1 and July 8, and December 26 and January 3. Reports also say the 9-10pm hours were also extended to 11pm the Saturdays and Sundays before and after the 4th of July and on the 4th of July.

Have fun with your fireworks, but be safe, and mindful of your neighbors.
