According to a report on ESPN.com, in a landmark decision, the Supreme Court has struck down a 1992 federal law barring states from legalizing sports betting.

At present, sports betting is only legal in Nevada, and state-run sports lotteries in New Jersey, Delaware, Oregon and Montana are also permitted.

The ruling would open up the potential for legal sports betting in Iowa and Illinois.

A bill to legalize sports gambling in Iowa already passed a Iowa House subcommittee in February and is now being considered by the legislature.

Tops sports officials have said they'd be open to legal sports gambling in Illinois.
