Got An Alarming Text With A Link In It? Yeah That’s A Scam.
At this point, it feels like everything is a scam.
Weird phone call? SCAM!
Weird Text: SCAM!
Weird DM? SCAM!
Weird Email? you guessed it SCAM!!!
I and many others have been getting weird texts from "banks" "UPS" "Amazon" and many others saying things about missed packages, and outstanding balances. A good rule of thumb is if you hadn't ordered something, or the text just doesn't make sense it's not a mistake rather it's a scam trying to get you to click a link in your confusion, or worry.
There are even fake "hookup" scams from beautiful women and handsome men. Who surprise freaking surprise aren't actually attractive men and women.
This is Phishing:
Phishing is a type of social engineering attack often used to steal user data, including login credentials and credit card numbers. It occurs when an attacker, masquerading as a trusted entity, dupes a victim into opening an email, instant message, or text message.
Scammers use fear, confusion, and sex to try and trick anyone they can to click a link or give out their more sensitive information.
How Do They Have My Number and Email?!
Odds are they have a lot of people's phone numbers and emails, they don't actually know anything about you besides maybe your name. That's why the texts and emails are always vague. They are sending it to thousands of others hoping to get a few clicks and more personal information.
Never Click a Link
At the end of the day, there is no real way to avoid these dumb and annoying scams BUT you can save yourself from getting more of your information out there. NEVER CLICK A LINK! Even from a friend!
Sometimes your friend's account could be hacked because they clicked a link and had their account taken over. The scammer and hacker will then try to get you to click the link. It's best to always check before clicking an unsolicited link from anyone and everyone.
As always stay smart and stay safe Quad Cities!
