I'll admit it... when I first heard grass tennis courts were coming to the Quad Cities, my first thought was, "Grass tennis courts? What? I didn't even know that was a thing!"

Most of us are used to seeing tennis played on hard courts, but grass courts are actually one of the rarest playing surfaces in the world. They're famous for being used at the legendary Wimbledon tournament in England, and now, believe it or not, we'll have them right here in Moline.

The Quad City Tennis Club is officially opening its new grass tennis courts on Thursday, and it's been a project years in the making.

It Took Years to Build

These aren't just regular patches of grass. Club officials say it took three to four years to prepare the courts so they're ready for competitive play.

Keeping them in top condition is also a huge job. Staff members test the ball bounce, roll the courts, and mow them every other day to make sure they play the way they're supposed to.

That level of maintenance is one of the biggest reasons most tennis clubs stick with traditional hard courts.

Anyone Can Play

The best part? You don't have to be a professional tennis player to experience them.

Club officials say the courts are open to anyone who wants to give grass-court tennis a try.

If you're curious to see what all the excitement is about, the official ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. July 9th at the Lawn Tennis Clubhouse, located at 1528 47th Avenue in Moline.
