A well-known summer event in Clinton is taking a break next year. The Tailgate N’ Tallboys country music festival will not return in 2026 after city leaders narrowly voted down a new contract with promoters in a 4–3 decision.

Concerns Over Cost and Low Local Turnout

The choice follows months of debate over the festival’s financial struggles, limited marketing, and lower-than-expected attendance from Clinton residents. Only about 20 percent of local attendees came from inside the city, raising questions about whether the event truly connected with the community.

Some aldermen expressed concern about continuing to invest taxpayer resources without seeing stronger local support. One council member said the festival needs to be “right-sized” for Clinton, adding that many residents may prefer something more similar to the city’s former Riverboat Days celebration.

Mayor Proposes New Budget Approach

Ahead of the vote, Mayor Scott Maddasion introduced a proposal aimed at giving the city full control over the festival’s budget. Under the previous 50-50 contract with USA Concerts and Events, the city spent more than $798,000 over the past three years. Maddasion said breaking even required around 12,000 people per day, but attendance typically landed closer to 6,000 or 7,000. “We want to break even, but we want our local businesses and we want our citizens to win,” he said. City leaders believe a smaller, more community-focused festival—with scaled-down talent, better marketing, and incentives for Clinton residents—could help rebuild local engagement and reduce financial risk.

Not a Permanent Goodbye

City leaders emphasized that this is not the end of large-scale entertainment in Clinton, nor necessarily the end of Tailgate N’ Tallboys. While the festival won’t take place this year, officials said it could return as early as 2027 if the event can be reshaped to better fit the city’s needs.

A Gentle Step Back

Leaders stressed that the decision wasn’t made lightly, especially knowing how much some residents looked forward to the festival each summer. But they say the pause is necessary to recalibrate the event. Their hope is to create an experience the community can fully embrace—one that honors Clinton’s traditions while offering something sustainable for years to come.
