Macomb police are on the search for a Western Illinois University freshman who is the suspect of a shooting that took place late on Tuesday night. The shooting happened on the Western Illinois University campus in Thompson Hall.

According to a press release from the Western Illinois University, at approximately 10:38 p.m. on Wednesday, September 15, Western Illinois University Office of Public Safety was notified of a student who had been shot in Thompson Hall on the Macomb campus. Within the same moments a fire alarm pull station was activated in Thompson Hall which was then evacuated.

WIU officials say a male resident of Thompson Hall was shot by a person known to him, who then fled the scene. The shooting was because of a roommate dispute and police believe this to be an isolated incident.

Freshman Kavion Poplous, 18, has been identified as the suspect. Police say Poplous is considered armed and dangerous. As of Wednesday morning, the search for Poplous is underway.

The victim was transported to McDonough District Hospital in Macomb and then transferred to another hospital. His current condition is unknown.

Western Illinois University has canceled all classes on Wednesday, including online and in-person classes. Class are closed for both the Macomb and Quad Cities campuses. All buildings on the Macomb and Quad Cities campuses, including residence halls, will be locked.
